AI Learns Like You Do — But Faster!
When you were little, you learned to recognize a dog by seeing lots of different dogs. Your brain noticed patterns — four legs, fur, tail, barks. Now you can recognize a dog even if you've never seen that exact dog before!
AI learns the same way, just with a lot more examples and much faster. It looks at millions of examples of something until it learns the pattern.
📚 If you studied for a test every day for 1,000 years, you still wouldn't have seen as many examples as some AI systems learn from. That's a LOT of studying!
Finding Patterns in Data
AI learns from data — which is just a fancy word for lots of information. Here are some examples:
- An AI that recognizes faces looks at millions of photos of faces
- An AI that translates languages reads billions of sentences in different languages
- An AI that plays chess studies millions of chess games
- An AI that writes stories reads huge amounts of books and articles
After seeing all those examples, the AI finds the patterns and uses them to do the task on its own.
GPT-4 (the AI behind ChatGPT) was trained on text that would take a human more than 300,000 years to read!
